Recently, Wanhua Chemical Group, a globally renowned polyurethane manufacturer, announced in Yantai the official start of construction on the second phase of its 1-million-ton annual capacity high-end Nylon 12 and supporting raw materials project. With a total investment of approximately 8.5 billion RMB, this project is regarded as a key industrial initiative driving the transition from old to new growth drivers in Shandong Province. As the project enters the equipment procurement and installation preparation phase, demand for a batch of high-performance lined valves designed for extreme corrosive conditions has been rapidly unleashed, drawing widespread attention from the chemical equipment and fluid control industries.

As a key representative of high-performance engineering plastics, Nylon 12 is widely used in the automotive, electronics, electrical, and high-end manufacturing sectors. The expansion of this second-phase project will not only further increase domestic Nylon 12 production capacity but also strengthen China's influence in the high-end engineering plastics industry chain. However, accompanying this capacity increase is a heightened demand for the safety and reliability of production equipment.
According to the head of the project's equipment department, the production process for Nylon 12 involves handling various highly corrosive chemical media, including fuming sulfuric acid and chlorosulfonic acid. These media impose extremely high demands on equipment materials. Traditional metal valves are prone to corrosion and leakage during long-term operation, making it difficult to meet the safety standards of modern, large-scale chemical plants. Therefore, the project has clearly prioritized the use of a new generation of PTFE/PFA-lined valves to ensure stable equipment operation under extreme conditions.
Compared to traditional lining structures, the valves used in this project generally employ compression-molded lining technology, creating a tighter bond between the fluoroplastic lining and the metal valve body. This process forms an integral lining structure through high-pressure molding, effectively eliminating gaps between the lining and the body. This reduces the risk of the lining detaching due to temperature changes or pressure fluctuations, significantly enhancing the valve's corrosion resistance and service life.
Notably, in terms of automation and safety management, the project has also, for the first time on a large scale, introduced corrosion-resistant control valves with wireless data transmission capabilities. These smart valves can collect and transmit key parameters such as flow rate, pressure, and temperature within the pipeline in real-time. Through a data platform, they enable remote monitoring and early warning, contributing to a more comprehensive safety monitoring system for the chemical complex and laying the foundation for future smart factory construction.
Industry insiders believe that this project signals a significant shift in the demand structure for valve equipment within China's high-end chemical industry. The previous cost-driven procurement model is gradually transitioning towards a comprehensive evaluation system that places greater emphasis on material performance, process reliability, and digital capabilities. As the scale of chemical plants continues to grow, equipment stability and predictability under extreme environments are becoming key indicators.
Following this trend, a number of domestic "little giant" companies specializing in anti-corrosion valves have begun to enter the supply chains of large-scale chemical projects. Leveraging continuous breakthroughs in fluoroplastic material modification, compression molding processes, and structural design, these companies are gradually narrowing the technological gap with international brands and achieving application substitution in certain niche segments.
As the project construction progresses steadily, the operational data from the Nylon 12 unit will also provide valuable practical experience for the long-term application of domestic specialty valves under extreme chemical conditions. The industry generally anticipates that once the project is completed and operational, it will not only further enhance China's competitiveness in the global high-end engineering plastics market but also bring new technological validation and industrial opportunities for the development of domestically produced high-end chemical equipment.
